About the Apprenticeship
Teaching Assistants play and important role in education encompassing special educational needs and emotional vulnerabilities. The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance student learning either in groups or individually, ensuring learners understand the work set, know their learning objectives and stay on task in order to make progress.
Teaching Assistants are vital members of the team who will play an integral part to the learners’ well-being, promoting self-belief, social inclusion and high self-esteem; ensuring learners thrive in a positive, nurturing, safe environment. It is an active role supporting the learner to access the curriculum.
Teaching Assistants are a good role model, act with honesty and integrity, take part in team meetings; contribute to planning and class activities. They promote Fundamental British Values through spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and positive behaviours which are crucial in contributing to improved learner progress and development.
What will I achieve?
This duration of this Apprenticeship is around 18 months, including the 8 week window for the End-Point Assessment.
On completion of the apprenticeship, including achievement of the End Point Assessment you will have achieved a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship.
What will I learn?
A Teaching Assist will develop the knowledge and skills to:
- Understand how students learn and develop and the importance to provide feedback to support and facilitate an appropriate level of independence
- Develop strategies to support and encourage learners to move towards independent learning
- Recognise the importance of using appropriate technology to support learning
- Use employer management information systems to manage the learning experience effectively and accurately
- Work with teachers/lecturers to understand and support assessment for learning and the need to accurately observe, record and report on learner participation
- Develop and appropriate knowledge of the curriculum and context you are working in
- Keep learners safe in education using current statutory guidance and the importance of sharing important information
- Recognise, adapt and respond to all learners, including those with special educational needs
Support from your Employer
Your employer should support you in achieving your apprenticeship standard. This support is given in a number of ways;
- Releasing you from your normal working hours to carry out the required 20% off-the-job training for the duration of your apprenticeship
- Allocate a work-place mentor to guide and support you whilst you are on programme
- Attend your review sessions to give feedback on your progress throughout the apprenticeship
- Ensure that you have access to relevant resources such as a library or learning resource centre
- Provide you with opportunities to practice new skills in your work environment
- Agree with you when you feel you are ready to undertake the End-Point Assessment
- Support you in preparing for End-Point Assessment
In order to be entered into the End-Point Assessment you will need to:
- Achieve the minimum time duration for the Standard (typically 18 months)
- Agree with your employer that you are ready to proceed beyond the Gateway, based on completion of all on-programme requirements
- Compile a portfolio of evidence
- Have achieved Level 2 in English and maths
The End-Point Assessment takes place when you have completed all of the on-programme learning and you have agreed with your employer that you are ready to complete your apprenticeship in the role of Teaching Assistant.
There are two parts to the End-Point Assessment;
- A 2-hour practical observation followed by a 15 minute question and answer session
- A professional discussion supported by a portfolio of evidence
Your portfolio of evidence, which is gathered over the duration of your apprenticeship, should include 10-15 pieces of evidence including:
- Feedback from performance management reviews
- Evidence of learner progression
- Work produced by you as a Teaching Assistant – e.g. interventions
- Evidence from practical observations and general observations obtained over the duration of your programme
- Observations carried out by competent teaching assistants, line managers, class teachers and mentors
- Assessor reviews
- Naturally occurring pieces of evidence – e.g. feedback from visitors/parents
- Details of any training and courses attended
- Notes from professional discussions
The following Covid-19 temporary discretion has been agreed until further notice.
The observation may be replaced by an alternative assessment consisting of a reflective account written by the apprentice and an expert witness statement. The apprentice will then undertake a question and answer session of up to 30 minutes with the external assessor.
Progression and Career Opportunities
In addition to ensuring full competency as a Teaching Assistant, this standard provided a foundation for potential progression in the Education sector And/or higher education
Whilst employers may have specific entry requirement for their role, you will be expected to have:
- 5 GCSEs at Grade C or 4/5 or above. These should include English and maths or;
- Other relevant qualifications and experience, including a relevant Level 2 qualification
